India to procure 437 ships by 2042 to boost domestic fleet capacity fast

Hundreds of vessels, but the first wave relies on imports

India has outlined a long-term plan to expand its domestic shipping fleet by procuring 437 vessels through 2041-42. The approach mixes local shipbuilding for parts of the order while initially importing highly specialized ships such as VLGCs and VLCCs. Officials say the goal is to build homegrown technology and skills, not just add tonnage.
