India raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre as state-run oil marketing companies absorb losses from global crude surging amid the West Asia conflict. Petrol and diesel had been unchanged for four years, but economists say the move could be the start of staggered increases. Further modest hikes may follow if crude stays above $100 per barrel and the Middle East situation persists, with analysts citing the duration of the US-Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz for direction.

The GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) has overhauled how GST appeals are processed, requiring pending and new cases to be reviewed by a division bench before assignment to a single bench. The rule targets disputes involving significant legal questions, aiming for consistent rulings and faster resolution. Cases under ₹50 lakh without legal issues may go straight to a single bench, but only with president or vice-president approval, and any later legal question forces referral back to the division bench. GSTAT also categorized disputes into three hearing tracks and set bench rosters with virtual, hybrid and circuit options across states and UTs.

Latest IIP data for FY26 shows India’s manufacturing is growing but not where jobs are. General IIP rose about 4.1% in FY26, yet manufacturing has averaged only ~3.3% annually since FY15. Capital-intensive, domestic-demand sectors like capital goods, metals, and infrastructure are performing strongly and building linkages. Meanwhile labour-intensive, export-oriented industries are contracting or barely growing: wearing apparel fell 5.3% in 2025-26, textiles grew just 1.2%, and other manufacturing collapsed. Analysts argue exports need a tailored push.
