Election Commission data points to record engagement in recent assembly polls, with women voting more than men and West Bengal topping polling percentages. But the follow-through is uneven: women elected as MLAs still remain low in states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Kerala. Third-gender candidates were limited and faced defeat.
Women voters turned out strongly in West Bengal’s assembly elections, with BJP’s welfare promises and emphasis on women’s safety drawing notable attention. TMC’s flagship scheme faced tougher competition, while concerns over employment and recruitment scams also influenced choices. Analysts say the pattern could signal a broader shift in how parties craft outreach and win key constituencies.

The Election Commission of India released the roadmap for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections after a strong 85.10% voter turnout. In a notable shift, women voters outnumbered men across polling. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4, with arrangements in place to securely and transparently process the mandates of over 48 million voters.
Elections across several Indian states and a Union Territory recorded unprecedented turnout, with women surpassing male voters in all five areas. Voter education campaigns appear to be driving the surge, though analysts also point to political backdrop pressures. The result brings cause for celebration, even as questions linger about what motivated so many voters to turn out.
West Bengal’s phase 2 polling shows women voters outnumbering men in 23 assembly seats, a pattern seen already in phase 1. The shift is most visible in urban areas around Kolkata and Salt Lake, where several constituencies record a sizable female surplus. Election data also points to consistently higher turnout among women than men.
Tamil Nadu goes to polls today in a single-phase election across all 234 assembly seats, with about 5.67 crore voters—51% women—eligible to vote. The race, traditionally dominated by a DMK–AIADMK bipolar contest, has turned into a triangular battle that could reshape the state’s political map. Out of 234 seats, 44 are reserved for SC and 2 for ST.
