The first Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express starts today, with a direct journey taking about five hours—an order-of-magnitude improvement for travellers across difficult terrain. Operating with 20 coaches, it will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. Fares are set between Rs 715 and Rs 1,515, aiming for dependable, all-weather connectivity.
Indian Railways has notified an increase in passenger train tariffs effective December 26. Long-distance ordinary, mail, express and premium services will see higher prices—1 paise per km for ordinary class journeys above 215 km and 2 paise per km for AC and non-AC. Suburban travel and season tickets will remain unchanged, sparing daily commuters.
