Scottie Scheffler surged back after a bogey at the 14th to finish tied atop the PGA Championship leaderboard at Aronimink Golf Club, joined by former champion Martin Kaymer and early pace-setter Aldrich Potgieter. Potgieter carded a three-under 67 with late birdies in chilly conditions, while Xander Schauffele, Sahith Theegala and other contenders stayed just one shot off. Rory McIlroy struggled off the tee and fell badly as the opening day tightened into a crowded race.
