The Supreme Court has directed the Centre and the National Investigation Agency to set up exclusive special courts to expedite pending NIA trials. The court ordered at least one special court for every 10 to 15 trials, with High Courts approached for establishment. Trials are to be conducted on a day-to-day basis, aiming to cut prolonged delays.
District and subordinate courts across India have 4,855 vacant judicial officer posts against a sanctioned strength of 25,886, deepening a backlog of over 4.8 crore cases. The Law and Justice Minister said High Courts and state governments are responsible for filling the vacancies, while the Supreme Court has laid out timelines for recruitment.
