Millions of workers are taking to the streets on May Day, driven by a mix of economic strain and global tensions. Rising inflation and falling purchasing power, alongside stagnant wages, are sharpening demands for higher pay and relief. The situation is further worsened by the ongoing Iran conflict, which has pushed up energy prices and intensified cost pressures across countries.
MDMK MP Vaiko on May Day traced the labour struggles behind May 1’s recognition, linking the global 1886 events to India’s own fight for workers’ rights. He says his 1990 request to then Prime Minister VP Singh was pivotal in declaring May Day a central government holiday, calling it one of his biggest achievements.
