India’s food regulator FSSAI has asked quick-commerce firm Blinkit to explain complaints that poor-quality eggs were sold on its platform. The watchdog took suo-moto cognisance of consumers’ social media complaints and wrote to Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, seeking a comprehensive action taken report within one week. Complainants alleged bad odor and a rubber-like texture. FSSAI also warned that e-commerce food operators must ensure online listings match physical labels and that sellers display valid FSSAI licenses or registrations.
Veterinary experts say chicken and eggs remain affordable, reliable sources of protein, while warning that viral misinformation is damaging the poultry sector. They address public fears around hormones, antibiotics, and bird flu, stressing that steroid hormone implants are not approved for poultry growth. They also point to steady growth in India’s egg and poultry meat production driven by genetics, feed, health, and management.

Starting April 1, the Uttar Pradesh government will require expiry dates stamped on all eggs, including individual eggs and cartons. Any egg lacking the date will be destroyed or treated as unfit for consumption.
