India’s first underwater metro nears completion as Kolkata’s corridor opens and connects Howrah

Only the elevated stretch runs now—underwater link is next

Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation has inaugurated the East-West corridor on Feb 13, connecting Kolkata and Howrah. Today, only the elevated portion is operational, but the final underwater stretch is targeted for completion by 2022. The INR 8,575 crore project will become India’s first underwater suburban rail transport, marking a major engineering milestone for the city.
